Butler kicks game-winner to lift Wildcats in double-overtime
BOSTON, Mass. - For the third home game in a row the Wheelock College women's soccer team was pushed to overtime, and for the second time, the Wildcats pulled out the victory. Sophomore forward Haley Butler (Yarmouthsport, Mass.) booted the game-winner from mid-field on a goal kick 1:28 into the second overtime to give Wheelock its first New England Collegiate Conference win of the season. Junior mid-fielder Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, Mass.) did her part for Newbury, scoring two goals on the day. Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass.) help put the Nighthawks on the scoreboard first at the 27:19 mark when she dribbled through a pack of Wheelock defenders and found Greene-Allen, who laced it past Wheelock defender Nicole Zina (Bristol, RI) for the score.
The Wildcats tied it up less than a minute later though, when senior Lindsey Lacourse (Scarborough, ME) scored on a penalty kick. The Wildcats took the lead ten minutes into the second period on a Nicki Wilson (Brookline, Mass.) goal, but Newbury evened things up at the 69:48 mark when Greene-Allen scored with the help of teammate Jasmine James (Wellesley, Mass.).
Despite the loss, Newbury outshot the Wildcats 33-7, and netted 18 corner kicks to Wheelock's two. Zina recorded 15 saves to pick up her first win of the season, while Tianna Dimaria (Plantsville, Conn.) saved one in the loss. Wheelock returns to action next Wednesday at Bay Path, while the Nighthawks travel to Mitchell on Monday.
