Dias scores two goals in Wheelock win on senior day
Boston, Mass. - Senior Alanna Dias (Swansea,
MA) stepped up big for the Wheelock Wildcats, netting two goals and
an assist to help lead her team to a 9-2 win over Southern Vermont
College Sunday in NECC play. Fellow senior Stacy Seidner (Pembroke,
NH) also had a pair of goals and an assist, while Leah Spector
(Madison, CT), the third in the graduating class, helped win the
ball at midfield numerous times, as the Wildcats outshot the
Mountaineers 39 to 3.
It was nine minutes before Wheelock was
able to convert a goal, when defensive player Erin Reardon (Old
Town, ME) found Seidner on a long pass downfield for the score. The
game remained close for the next twenty minutes before Dias notched
her first goal of the game and of the season on a pass from Lindsey
Lacourse (Scarborough, ME).
The Mountaineers cut into the lead a
minute and a half later when Daryl Aubin (Forestdale, RI) broke
away at midfield and slid the ball past goalie Nicole Zina
(Bristol, RI). Wheelock would add two more scores, by Kim Rogers
(Derby, CT) and Haley Butler (Yarmouthsport, MA), respectively
before the end of the half, giving Wheelock a 4-1 advantage heading
into the second period.
Leslie Surdam (Hoosick, NY) added a goal
for Southern Vermont in the second half while Lindsey Lacourse,
Amanda Siebert (Salem, CT), and Christine Pellerin (Auburn, MA)
each scored for Wheelock.
The win improves the Wildcats record to
3-12-1 and 2-4-1 in the NECC while the Mountaineers fall to 0-13
overall and 0-7 in the NECC. Wheelock will next travel to Daniel
Webster for a match Wednesday at 3:30.
