Womens soccer turns in best performance yet, falls to ENC

QUINCY, Mass. - The Wheelock women's soccer team gave up only three goals on Thursday night, but the offense continues to search for that first goal as the Wildcats fell 3-0 to Eastern Nazarene College. The Lions' Kara Webber (Marshfield, MA) provided all the offense her team would need scoring three times in under 12 minutes in the first half to help Eastern Nazarene improve to 2-5 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 0-4. The Lions controlled play from the start with Webber finally capitalizing on a nifty pass from Brenna Mereness (Castleton, NY) fifteen minutes into the match. Weber continued her spirited play by stripping a Wheelock defender of the ball and went in uncontested on Wildcat keeper Allie Chiesa (Medford, MA). Chiesa nearly made a miraculous save, but Weber would not be denied and the Lions took a 2-0 lead.
For the Wildcats, posting a shutout in the second half is exactly what head coach Stephanie Smyrl is hoping will get her team going. "We had a full week to work on our defensive shape and the team displayed their ability to take what they learned in practice and bring it to the pitch," said Smyrl. Wheelock will play two more non-conference opponents before opening up New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday, October 3rd when they travel to Becker College.
Freshman keeper Brittany Hislop (Burley, WA) kept the clean sheet as she turned away seven Wildcat shots earning her second shutout of the year.
Wheelock returns to action at Regis College next Thursday, Sept. 24 at 4:00 pm.
