Wheelock adds lacrosse for 2010-11
BOSTON, Mass. - The Wheelock College athletic department continues to grow as athletic director Diana Cutaia announced the addition of both men's and women's lacrosse for the 2010-11 school year. This will be the fourth year in a row that Wheelock, a NCAA Division III athletic department, has added a sport. In 2007-08 Wheelock added men's basketball and tennis, followed by men's and women's cross country in 2008-09, and men's soccer in the current school year.
"This is another great moment for Wheelock athletics," said Director of Athletics, Diana Cutaia. "The growing popularity and interest in the sport made lacrosse a natural choice as we continue to search for sports that will satisfy the interests and talent of our student athletes."
For the last decade, lacrosse has been one of the fastest-growing team sports in the country according to a recent survey by US Lacrosse. The sport, which competes in the spring, is played in even the most challenging weather conditions, an added benefit for colleges that compete in the New England weather.
The women's program will be seeking entry into the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) where the team would compete against teams such as Becker College, Bridgewater State, Castleton, Elms, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Westfield, and Worcester State.
Wheelock is currently exploring associate memberships for the men's team. There will be a regional search for coaching positions for both the men's and women's teams.
