BROOKLINE, MA - Sophomore guard Jessica Ramsey (Milford, MA) scored 17 points and matched her career high with seven rebounds for the Wheelock College women's basketball team in a 60-45 road loss to New England Collegiate Conference foe Newbury College tonight in Brookline, MA on the campus of Hellenic College. The Wildcats fall to 0-9 overall and 0-3 in league play, while the Nighthawks improve to 5-5 and 3-0.
Wheelock was hot right from the opening tip-off, taking a 10-2 lead in the first 3:05 to play, fueled by eight points from Ramsey, including a pair of three-pointers. The Wildcats maintained their largest margin when junior forward Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA) converted a layup for a 14-6 score at the 15:21 mark of the opening half, but the Nighthawks swooped in to take the lead. The home team went on a torrid 18-1 run, including 14 straight points, to take a 24-15 advantage with 5:19 to play in the first period. Junior guard Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, MA) nailed a jumper with 4:40 showing to put a stop to Newbury's burst. Milton later hit a jump shot of her own to pull the Wildcats to within 25-19 with 3:25 to go in the half, but the Nighthawks scored seven of the final eight points to close out the half and take a 32-20 lead into the intermission.
The teams traded baskets to begin the second stanza as Newbury held onto a 34-22 cushion with just under two minutes gone in the half, before Wheelock put together a 9-2 stretch, paced by seven points from Ramsey, to cut the deficit to 36-31 with 12:39 remaining in the contest. It would be as close as the Wildcats would get as the Nighthawks pulled away with a 16-4 run over the next seven minutes to take their largest lead of the night at 52-35 with 5:26 to play.
Ramsey added a steal and an assist to her evening, while sinking all four of her free throw attempts for Wheelock, while Milton came off the bench to finish with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Senior forward Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, CT) pulled down a team-high 13 boards to go with six points, four steals, three assists and three blocked shots and McCaffrey chipped in with six points, six rebounds and a block.
Junior center Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA) led Newbury with a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds in addition to blocking a shot and coming up with a steal, while senior guard Kendra Bannister (Washington, DC) contributed with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Senior guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, MA) dropped in 10 points, grabbed two rebounds, dished for four assists, picked up three thefts and rejected a pair of shots. Sophomore forward Katie Haney (Winchendon, MA) also chipped in with nine points and 12 rebounds, just missing a double-double.
The Wildcats will be in action again on Tuesday, January 10 when they host NECC rival Mitchell College at Brunelli Court on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA, while the Nighthawks return to the hard court on the same night with a trip to Longmeadow, MA to take on Bay Path College at 8:00 p.m.
