Women’s basketball team wins first NECC game

Bennington, VT - Last Saturday's 64-44 win over Southern Vermont College marked several firsts for the Wheelock Women's Basketball team. The victory is the first in the newly formed New England Collegiate Conference, and it's also the first NCAA win for first year head coach Brooke Freeburg.

Key for the Wildcats was the return of last year's leading scorer Sarah Brown (Plainville, CT), who scored 18 points, playing in her first game since the home opener in November. Brown was 7 of 13 from the field, including 4-7 from behind the three point arc.

The Wildcats trailed for the first five minutes of the game until Sharrell Brown (Brooklyn, NY) nailed a three pointer to give Wheelock its first lead of the game.

The Mountaineers regained the lead and went into the locker room with a 2 point advantage, but Wheelock busted out for a 16-5 run in the second half to take the double-digit lead and put the game away.

Junior Elise Ordille (Waltham, MA) scored a season- high 12 points for Wheelock, while teammate Joy Holliday was also in double-digits, scoring ten points.Wheelock dropped Tuesday night's contest against Elms College. Freshman Jessica Battista scored a team-high 18 points in the loss.
