Perault Collects Three Hits to Lead Softball vs. UMaine-Presque Isle

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Senior Kim Perault (Medford, MA) went 3-4 on the day to lead the Wheelock College softball team in a pair of losses to visiting University of Maine-Presque Isle this afternoon at the PMC Softball Field on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The Owls took the first game, 18-1, and the nightcap, 15-0.  Both games were halted after five innings, due to the eight-run mercy rule.  The Wildcats fall to 0-23 on the season, while UMaine-Presque Isle improves to 5-18.

Perault was 2-3 in the first game and 1-1 with a walk in the second contest for Wheelock.  Senior centerfielder Sara Buscemi (Arlington, MA) also registered a multi-hit effort, going 2-5 with a stolen base.  Sophomore first baseman Becca House (Middlebury, CT) and freshmen Kayla Grosso (Barnstable, MA) and Katie Fleming (West Boylston, MA) each singled in the game as well.

Freshmen outfielders Ashley Laking (Topsfield, ME) and Taylor Cochran (Topsfield, ME) combined to go 9-13 with five runs batted in to lead UMPI.  Laking was 5-6 with a double, two RBI, three stolen bases and five runs scored on the day for the Owls, while Cochran was 4-7 with a double, three runs batted in and four runs scored. 

UMaine-Presque Isle blew game one open with a 14-run fourth inning, sending 19 batters to the plate in the frame.  The Owls took advantage of three errors and also received run-scoring singles from senior third baseman Kellie Peers (Caswell, ME), freshman second baseman Brittany Luetjen (Hampden, ME), sophomore shortstop Whitney Donovan (Ashland, ME), freshman Randi Kaplan (Embden, ME) and freshman catcher Megan Hannigan (Houlton, ME).  Laking and freshman right fielder Jessica Campbell (Lisbon, ME) also stroked RBI doubles in the inning, while junior starting pitcher Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, ME) provided the big blow with a three-run home run to left field to give the Owls a 16-1 advantage.  UMPI added a pair of runs in the fifth to increase its lead to 18-1, including a run-producing single from freshman first baseman Alyson Pullen (Waterville, ME). 

The Owls got on the board first when they scored twice without a hit in the opening inning of the first game, taking advantage of two errors, two walks and a wild pitch.  Wheelock got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Fleming smacked a one-out double and moved to third on a single by Perault to set up a sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder Felicia Baptista (Stoughton, MA) to plate Fleming and cut the deficit to 2-1.  UMPI held the home team scoreless the rest of the way. 

Coffin (1-10) earned the victory for the Owls, allowing one run on five hits and a walk, while striking out five in five complete innings.  Freshman hurler Kiersten Cosgrove (Pequannock, NJ) suffered the loss for the Wildcats, striking out a batter in five complete innings. 

UMPI broke into the scoring column with a pair of runs in the first inning of game two and added nine more in the second to put the game out of reach with an early 11-0 cushion.  The Owls tacked on a single run in the third and three more in the fourth for the 15-0 win.  UMPI capitalized on an error and a wild pitch to score its runs in the first.  The second frame was highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Hannigan for her first collegiate long ball.  Cochran singled home a pair of runs in the inning, while Laking contributed with an RBI single as well.  The Owls took advantage of another error in the third to score a run.  Wheelock committed six miscues for the game.  An error and a wild pitch contributed to the three-run fourth to pad the visitors' lead.  

Donovan (3-0) earned the shutout for UMPI, yielding just three hits and a pair of free passes, while striking out seven in five innings.  Perault took the loss for the Wildcats, striking out two batters in five innings of work. 

Peers finished the day going 4-9 with two RBI and four runs scored for the Owls, while Hannigan knocked in four runs with a pair of hits, scored four times and drew a pair of walks.  Coffin drove in three runs, scored twice and collected two hits. Luetjen contributed with three hits, two RBI and three runs scored.   

The Wildcats will be in action again on Saturday, April 20 when they travel to Weston, MA to take on New England Collegiate Conference foe Regis College for a 11:00 a.m. twinbill, while UMPI returns to Chestnut Hill tomorrow for a single game vs. Pine Manor at 3:30 p.m.
