Mitchell edges Wheelock in final frame

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A Sara Krolikowski two run homer off the left field foul pole in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference in a 6-5 win over Wheelock College in game one of a New England Collegiate Conference double-header Sunday afternoon at Pine Manor College. The Mariners took the second game 11-2 to improve to to 20-10 overall and 12-2 in the NECC.

Wheelock dropped to 1-21 overall and 1-9 in conference play.

Game 1

With Mitchell leading 1-0 after the top of the first, Erin Reardon launched a double to left center field before Elise Ordile knocked her in with a single up the middle to even the score. Mitchell posted a three spot in the top of the third to take a 4-1 advantage. The Wildcats cut the lead in half when Nicole Zina knocked in Sarah Negron, who had tripled.

The Wildcats took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Reardon singled to start the inning, Ordile reached on an error and Val Cook singled to load the bases. Amanda Siebert walked to force in another run, and Niki Rapsis smacked a single up the middle to pick up two RBI’s and give Wheelock the 5-4 advantage.

Reardon and Rapsis led Wheelock with two RBI’s each while Reardon was the only player with multiple hits, going 2-4 with two runs scored.

Nicole Zina took the loss for the Wildcats , scattering six runs on nine hits while striking out four.


Game 2

Mitchell was once again led by Krolikowski, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the nightcap while freshman Meghan Burke added two hits and knocked in three runs. Suplicki, junior Jen Bordonaro and sophomore Shannen Pelletier also had multi-hit games for the Mariners, who finished with 13 hits in the contest.

Zina and Siebert each had multi-hit games for Wheelock, with Zina picking up both RBI’s in game two.

Mitchell Sophomore Marissa Thomas scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings and allowed only two runs while striking out five.  She improved to 11-4 overall on the season.

Wheelock will travel to Southern Vermont Tuesday for a double-header that begins at 4:00.
