Clutch hitting propels Wildcats to extra inning win over Daniel Webster
Nashua, NH - Nicole Zina (pictured) cracked a two-out, two-run single in the top of the eighth inning Wednesday night to propel Wheelock to a 7-5 win over conference rival Daniel Webster Wednesday night.
Wheelock dropped the first game of the double header 5-1 before rallying for the game two win. In game one, Daniel Webster freshman Sam Langlois (Ramyond, N.H.) fired a complete game four-hit victory, allowing one run and striking out 10 to guide the Eagles to the win.
In the opener, Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.), Amanda Varricchio (Middletown, Conn.) and Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) notched two hits each as the Eagles (13-14-1, 8-5-1 NECC) tied the all time program record with their 13th win of the season, and won their 10th straight.
Tiana Winter (New Ipswich, N.H.) and April Molina (Fairfield, Conn.) added single RBI for the winners.
The Eagles two unearned runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second buoyed by three Wheelock errors and tacked on two in the sixth on three hits.
Kristen Brock (Plainville, Mass.) had a RBI single for Wheelock (5-18, 5-7 NECC), while Elise Ordile (Waltham, Mass.) doubled and scored.
Stacy Seidner (Pembroke, N.H.) took the loss (2-8).
In the nightcap, Wheelock rallied from a 4-2 deficit to tie it with two in the top of the sixth and followed with three in the eighth aided by an error to salvage the split.
Starting pitcher Nicole Perullo (Revere, Mass.) had two hits for
the Wildcats including a two-run double in the third. Seidner added
two hits knocking in one, while Nicole Zina (Bristol, R.I.) added
two hits.
Seidner (3-8) bounced back to earn the win with 4 2/3 innings of
relief of Perullo.
Langlois took the loss (9-7), with three innings of relief of Wilson.
Winter led the Eagles with three RBI including two sac flies, while Waller went 3 for 4, scoring twice. Kristina Rieger (Concord, N.H.) added two hits and knocked in a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Wheelock hosts Southern Vermont in a NECC doubleheader Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
