CHESTNUT HILL, MA - For the second straight match, sophomore Caelin Mooney (Rensselaer, NY) won three games to lead the Wheelock College men's tennis team in a 9-0 loss to host Newbury College today in a New England Collegiate Conference match that was played on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Wildcats fall to 0-10 overall and 0-8 in league play, while the Nighthawks improve to 1-6 and 1-5.
Mooney won games in two straight sets, including two in the second set of a 6-1, 6-2 loss at second singles to Newbury sophomore Wayne Gethers (Cambridge, MA). Junior Sunshine Shearer (English Harbour, Antigua) also won three games in singles action for Wheelock in a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to junior Steve Carey (Andover, MA) at number four. Shearer teamed with sophomore Rosie Camara (Bristol, RI) to take a game at number two doubles in an 8-1 loss to the Newbury tandem of Gethers and Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain). Camara won the first two games of her collegiate career for the Wildcats, winning a game in each set of a 6-1, 6-1 loss at third singles to Font-Raventos. Freshman Jamileh Sabeti-Javid (Nice, France) won a game for the second consecutive match for Wheelock in a 6-0, 6-1 loss at fifth singles to sophomore Joey Verdon (Catskill, NY).
The Wildcats will be in action again on Saturday, April 20 when they travel to New London, CT to take on NECC foe Mitchell College in a 12:00 p.m. start, while the Nighthawks host Mitchell tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
