Carey-Snow Wins First Career Singles Match for Men's Tennis vs. Newbury

BOSTON, MA - Freshman Miles Carey-Snow (Brunswick, ME) won at number one singles for the Wheelock College men's tennis team in a 7-2 loss to visiting Newbury College this evening in a New England Collegiate Conference dual match played at the Winsor Courts in Boston, MA.  The Wildcats fall to 1-8 overall and 0-7 in league play, while the Nighthawks win their first match of the season to improve to 1-7 and 1-6.

Carey-Snow dropped the first set, 6-3, to sophomore Gerard Font-Raventos (Barcelona, Spain), before rebounding to tie the second set, 6-6.  The match official determined that the sets had been split and the match would be decided by a third set super tie-breaker.  Carey-Snow outlasted his Newbury foe, 12-10, to win the third set and the match.

Sophomore Moira McCarthy (Conway, NH) also won in singles play for Wheelock, winning the first set at sixth singles over freshman Josh Seekins (Winthrop, ME), 7-5 and led the second set, 5-4, before Seekins retired with an ankle injury.

Senior Ben Weiner defeated Wheelock sophomore Claire O'Donoghue (East Haven, CT) at number two singles, 6-1, 6-3.  He combined with freshman Wayne Gethers (Cambridge, MA) at second doubles to down O'Donoghue and senior Irene Gonzalez (Madrid, Spain) without dropping a game, 8-0. 

Newbury won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead in the match.  Font-Raventos teamed with junior Robert Leng (Saugus, MA) for an 8-2 victory over Carey-Snow and classmate Scott Sobel (Silver Spring, MD) and the Nighthawks' duo of sophomore John Morgan (Cumberland, RI) and Seekins overcame sophomores Emily Morgan (Easton, NH) and McCarthy, 8-3.  

Newbury won the first four singles matches as well.  Gethers was the victor at number five singles over Wildcats' sophomore Ian Driscoll (Framingham, MA), 6-0, 6-2, while Leng took down Sobel, 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.  John Morgan took fourth singles for the Nighthawks over Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-1. 

Wheelock will be in action again tomorrow when it travels to Leicester, MA for a 3:00 p.m. NECC match with Becker College, while Newbury heads to New London, CT tomorrow for a 3:30 match with Mitchell College.
