That season, the Colonels went 16-5-3, tied a school record with 11 shutouts, and placed third in the league's regular-season standings behind a 9-2-2 mark. Ulm was an assistant coach at Tufts University during the 2006 season, when he also served as program director for the junior varsity squad. The Jumbos went 7-6-2 overall as members of the ultra-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Ulm spent the previous fall as head coach of the junior varsity boys' soccer team at Nashua (N.H.) South High School, where he helped the Panthers post a 6-6-4 record after playing 16 winless games in 2004. Ulm's additional duties at Nashua South included assisting the varsity team.

Ulm has also been active in the realm of club soccer, most recently working with the Hingham-based Galway Rovers Football Club since January 2010 as the head coach of a U-14 girls' squad. In 2006, he worked as a skills trainer in Bedford, N.H., with the In The Net Soccer Academy for coed students between the ages of 7 and 18 and served as the head coach of a U-19 boys' team through the World Cup Soccer Club of Greater Nashua. Between 2005 and 2006, Ulm was the assistant director of the Lil' Kickers child development program in Bedford, where he taught soccer and additional motor skills to children between 18 months and 8 years old.

A native of Pepperell, Ulm graduated from Ithaca (N.Y.) College in 2005, earning a degree in sport management while minoring in coaching. He coached the Ithaca club team in 2003 and 2004, helping the squad advance to a regional tournament semifinal and draw the No. 4 ranking in the Northeast. Ulm has earned a pair of national coaching certifications, receiving an NSCAA National Diploma and a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) "D" License.
