BOSTON, Mass. - Wheelock College scores a goal in each half to beat the visiting Owls of UMaine Presque Isle. The win was the first win in program history.
How It Happened: The game was scoreless for most of the first half, until the Wildcats were able to score on a cross from Sam Murray (Boston, Mass.) to Pasulayman Sowe (Lynn, Mass.). Wheelock led the Owls 1-0 at halftime with UMaine Presque Isle leading in total shots 15-8.
The Owls put early pressure on Wheelock with two shots on the Wildcats goalie Jordan Bernard (Westbrook, Conn.) made two incredible saves. Wheelock added to their lead when freshman Ian Sobral (Sao Paolo, Brazil) beat his man up the near sideline and sent the ball across the box to a crashing Murray who put it just past the diving goalie.
In the 88th minute, UMaine Presque Isle midfielder Sean Barbosa (Caribou, Maine) put a ball on the goal that was blocked as it rolled just past the goal. Bernard made one more save to keep the Owls off the board and secure the win for the Wildcats.
Who Stood Out: The Wheelock goalie made 13 saves and recorded his first shutout of his career. Sophomore Sam Murray led the Wildcats with one goal and one assist off five shots.
What It Means: The Wildcats won their first game in program history in front of a loud home crowd.
Up Next: Wheelock looks to continue their success against Dean College on the road Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
