NEWTON, Mass. – The Mount Ida College men's soccer team earned a 5-0 win over visiting Wheelock College on Monday night at Alumni Field.
How It Happened: Sophomore Adam Beaty (Middletown, Conn.) scored for the first time from his defense position, while freshman strikers Ethan Sweet (Claremont, N.H.) and Brandon Dickens(East Hartford, Conn.) each scored for the first time just four games into their career (2-2).
Junior Juan Brenes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) got the scoring started with his team-leading third goal of the year at the 10:39 mark, finishing a hard shot past the far post.
Beaty doubled Mount Ida's advantage with a beautiful header off of a perfect ball served in by first year Damon Deocleciano (Lowell, Mass.), who picked up the assist.
Dickens and Sweet scored their first collegiate goals less than ten minutes apart in the second half, with Dickens beating Wheelock keeper Jordan Bernard (Westbrook, Conn.) far post, and then Sweet tapping in a rebound after Bernard couldn't corral a hard shot from Cody Seel (Petersburg, N.Y.).
Seel scored his first goal of the year with five minutes to play after he broke down the Wildcats defense.
Who Stood Out: Bernard was splendid in net for the Wildcats (0-4), making 19 saves, including several diving stops to prevent further damage for his team.
What It Means: After two home games, Wheelock started the first game of their three game road swing. The Wildcats will be traveling to Vermont for back-to-back road games.
Up Next: Wheelock travels to Southern Vermont College on Saturday for a 3:30 pm game, their New England Collegiate College (NECC) opener. The Wildcats will then travel to Green Mountain College to complete their road trip.
