Kashouh turns in record setting performance
BOSTON, Mass. - To say that goalkeeper Victor Kashouh
(Providence, RI) was impressive in his first game for the Wheelock
men's soccer team is an understatement. Though the Wildcats fell
9-0 to Suffolk University in the first men's soccer game in school
history, Kashouh recorded 29 saves; the most by a goalkeeper in
NCAA Division III men's soccer since 2007 and tied for
15th in the history of Division III men's soccer.
Kashouh's performance becomes even more astounding when put in the
context of his experience. The keeper hadn't played soccer before
last week.
"Vic's first touch of a soccer ball came days before we played
Suffolk," head coach Sercan Fenerci said. "He never played keeper
before, but I knew him from last year while I coached him in
basketball. He is one of the hardest working athletes I've ever
known."
Kashouh was the busiest player on the field in Monday night's
opener against Suffolk, as the Rams recorded 64 shots against the
Wildcats, spending much of the time on Wheelock's side of the
field. But the six foot Kashouh was tough, allowing only three
goals in the first half while recording 18 goals.
Fenerci, who is also the assistant men's basketball coach at
Wheelock, worked with Kashouh during Kashouh's freshman year on the
men's basketball team, and knew his athleticism would be an asset
to the soccer team.
"I knew that he was athletic enough to play keeper even though he
never played before and in the first practice he proved that,"
Fenerci said. "He is going to be a big support to his teammates who
realized that they have a true keeper on the back line."
Kashouh and the men's soccer team will get the opportunity to play
for the home crowd on Sunday, September 20th when
Southern Vermont College travels to Pine Manor College (Wheelock's
home venue) for a 1:00pm match.
