Fournier, Fenton Lead Men's Basketball at Elms
CHICOPEE, MA - Freshman guard Derek Fournier (Johnston, RI) drained seven three-pointers and scored 23 points, while classmate Nicholas Fenton (East Hartford, CT) netted 15 points and dished out 11 assists to lead the Wheelock College men's basketball team in a 95-77 loss to host Elms College this evening in a New England Collegiate Conference game in Chicopee, MA. The Wildcats fall to 1-18 overall and 0-11 in league play, while the Blazers win their fifth straight to improve to 12-10 and 10-3.
Fournier added two rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist to his night for Wheelock, while Fenton grabbed five rebounds, came up with four steals and blocked a shot. Sophomore forward Joe Reedy (Orlando, FL) contributed with 17 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in 26 minutes off the bench and freshman forward Anthony Williams (White Plains, NY) chipped in with 12 points, seven boards, two blocks and an assist.
In the first half, Elms netted the first six points of the game but Wheelock kept it close, pulling to within one (13-12) when Williams made a jumper at the 13:14 mark. With the score set at 26-24 in favor of the Blazers, Elms went on a 15-2 run that featured a pair of treys from Andre French (Torrington, CT) and one each from sophomore guard Derek Murphy (Columbia, MD) and senior forward Dustin Trail (East Hartford, CT) to set the score at 41-26 with 3:20 to play in the frame. Wheelock answered scoring 10 of the next 14 points including a tip-in at the buzzer by Williams to pull the Wildcats to within nine at the break (45-36).
In the second stanza, Elms maintained a steady advantage before it began to pull away with 8:50 to play in the contest. Leading 69-59, the Blazers went on a 21-10 run to post a 90-69 lead with 3:20 to play in the game. Murphy and French each hit a three-pointer during the stretch and senior forward Isaiah Odunlami (Providence, RI) capped the run with a pair of free throws.
Wheelock will be in action again on Thursday, February 6 when it travels to Newark, NJ to take on Division I foe New Jersey Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m., while Elms returns to NECC action on the same night when it travels to Regis College for a 7:00 p.m. tilt in Weston, MA.
