Shute makes smooth transition to defense
Kelsey McAuliffe
(Groveland, MA) scored two goals against Elms College, but it
wasn't enough to propel the wildcats to victory as the team fell
4-2 in conference action. Wheelock outshot the blazers 17-8, with
12 of those shots coming in the second half. Julie Kilcoyne
(Sterling, MA) and Kylie Hefford (Exeter, NH) each had an assist in
the effort.
On Saturday, the wildcats dropped a 4-0
decision against visiting Becker College, the top team in the NECC.
Despite the loss, head coach Kyoungho Koh sees a lot of progress
with everyone on her team, including freshman Hannah Shute
(Yarmouth, ME). Shute, who was primarily a midfield before arriving
at Wheelock, has made the transition to defense and is performing
well in her new capacity.
"Throughout the season, Hannah as quickly
developed stronger defensive skills and has become a more and more
skilled defender who can play either right or left back," said
Coach Koh. "Her ability to assess the offensive play coming at her
and to intercept or stay with strong offensive opponents has made
her invaluable in a backfield that is already young with sophomores
at the goalkeeping and center back positions."
