Field hockey defeats Bay Path, Michaela Ross earns honors
Longmeadow, Mass.- The Wheelock field hockey
team defeated Bay Path College 5-0 on Saturday, winning the first
New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) game in school history and
improving to 1-1 on the week. The Wildcats dropped their first game
against Salem State College 8-0 before bouncing back for a win
against Bay Path. Kelsey McAuliffe (Groveland, MA), Jill Chaffee
(Bridgewater, MA), Ashley Howard (Gardner, MA), Andrea Gutierrez
(Westport, CT), and Julie Kilcoyne (Sterling, MA) scored the goals
for the Wildcats while Milbrey Hendrix (Kennett Square, PA) had
three assists on the afternoon. The win improves the Wildcats to
1-6 on the season.
On Monday, Michaela Ross (Mansfield, MA)
was named NECC player of the week for her outstanding defensive
play. The sophomore defender, along with her backline, kept Bay
Path to no shots on goal for the entire 70 minutes of play.
"In the three games this week, Michaela
has shown herself over and over again to be a solid and explosive
defensive player," said head coach Kyoungho Koh. "She is patient
and smart on defense which allows her to not only turnover the
ball, but move the ball quickly on our offensive behalf. She
has also done a remarkable job shifting with changes in the
backfield as we find a combination that will begin to work and shut
out offenders."
