Wheelock Athletic Department to host "A Night of Magic" fundraiser
BOSTON, MA - Wheelock College will host A Night of Magic on Saturday, Sept. 25, with proceeds supporting the Wheelock Department of Athletics. The magic show will feature more than a half dozen local performers, including one who has made national television appearances, and begins at 7 p.m. in the Wheelock Family Theatre.
Tickets for the event are $5 for college students with a valid college ID and $15 for general admission, and can be purchased online at commerce.cashnet.com/wheelockempay or at the door. Any ticket inquiries can also be sent to athletics@wheelock.edu. Doors to the show, whose performers are generously donating their time to the endeavor, open at 6:30 p.m. Children in attendance can receive a free magic trick.
Among those slated to appear is Boston's David Oliver, who has performed for the Boston Celtics and made numerous television appearances, including on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and CBS' "The Early Show." Dane Grigas, Ian Rich, and University of Massachusetts Lowell student Reed Spool all hail from the Boston area, as Rich is a past president of the Boston chapter of the Society of Young Magicians. New Jersey-based Matt Schick and Ben Zabin, a 12-year-old magician from Connecticut, will lend their talents to the show. Wheelock student and Boston-based professional balloon artist Jonah Faigel will also take to the stage.
The event was organized by junior Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, CT/Sheehan), the president of Wheelock's Class of 2012, the Wheelock Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Volunteer Coordinator, and a member of the women's basketball team. A long-time magician, Drescher will serve as the show's host and will perform.
A handful of special guests are expected, including Director of Athletics Diana Cutaia, SAAC Co-President and men's basketball junior Elliot Hernandez (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Cypress Bay), and many of the athletic teams' coaches.
Wheelock is a private institution with the public mission of improving the quality of life for children and their families by providing a strong education in the arts and sciences and in its professional fields - child and family studies, social work, and education. Since fielding five women's athletic teams during the 2006-07 school year, the Wheelock Department of Athletics has grown to include 11 NCAA Division III programs for 2010-11, with five offerings for men and six for women. The Wildcats were a charter member of the three-year-old New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).
