What's Up with the Wildcats Nancy Unis

Full Name: Nancy Ann Unis

Sport: Field Hockey

Birthday: October 19, 1990

Hometown: Hull, MA

High School: Hull

Year: Junior

Major: Human Development/Early Childhood Education with a minor in American Studies.  What made you choose that major?  I chose my major because I've always known I've wanted to make a difference in kids' lives. Teaching gives you this incredible feeling- when you overcome a challenge and a child has finally mastered what they were struggling with, it's the best feeling in the world.

Nickname: Nance, spelled with an "e".  A lot of people leave out the "e" when they spell my nickname.

What do you like most about Wheelock? What first attracted me to Wheelock was just the atmosphere.  Everybody's super-friendly.  The academic portion really appealed to me and it's famous within the teaching community.  That's my passion.  I love it all around and am really involved on campus.

Where is your favorite place on campus?  I really like the Resource Center.  I work there.  It's just a really cool atmosphere to be in.  I like helping people down there get markers and stuff.

What is your favorite sports team?  The Red Sox.  Bruins second.  Why the Red Sox?  I love baseball and love to watch baseball.  My Dad has instilled that within me from the very beginning.  My Sister, Linda, she plays hockey, so that's been a really big part of my life too.

Who is your favorite athlete? Jacoby Ellsbury.  This is going to sound really shallow, but he's really cute. Ha, ha, ha.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?  Most people don't know that I love to creative write and I really, really want to write a children's book someday.  What would the children's book be about?  Well, my Dad and my Cousin, Adam, call each other "Bald Eagle" (my Dad's bald) and Adam has bright red hair, so they call each other "Bald Eagle" and "Red Rooster".  They have this really cool banter between them and they make me laugh when I'm with them.  I was thinking of doing "The Bald Eagle and the Red Rooster" and the Bald Eagle tells the Red Rooster to grow up and stop being so immature, but in reality it's the Bald Eagle, who really needs a lesson on how be.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?  Emerald Aisle, North Carolina.  My Aunt and Uncle live there.  It's on the Crystal Coast in North Carolina.  It's beautiful.  I've been vacationing there since I was really little.  Really white beaches and they have the coolest shells.  I love being around my family.  I don't get to see them that often because they live so far away.  It's a special place to me.

What accomplishment are you most proud of in your sport?  Winning against Becker this year.  I mean beating Becker is always nice, but it was important.  You know, that game we played really well as a team and those girls are my family.  It was a really great win for us and a really good moment.

What is your favorite holiday?  Christmas Eve and I'll tell you why.  I love Christmas in general, but Christmas Eve is really special because it's family that I don't really get to see that often.  I see them individually a lot, but not together as a group and we just eat and play board games all night.  It's just really nice to spend time with my family that I don't get to see that often.

Bacon bits or croutons?  Croutons.  100%.  I love bread.  I love bacon too, but croutons just like makes it.  I would eat croutons out of a bag.

Would you rather live in a log cabin or downtown?  Downtown.  I don't know if I could handle the isolation of a log cabin.  I'm a people person, I like being around people.

What does community service mean to you?  Community service is a huge part of who I am as a person.  I've volunteered in schools pretty much since freshman year of high school, maybe even before that.  It really makes me happy to see a child grow from what you teach them.  It's really been a big part of my life and it's obviously a huge part of the Wheelock community.  You asked me earlier why I love Wheelock and that's part of the reason.  I can talk about how much I love Wheelock all day.  It's really important, especially with the mission that the college has.

Do you have any pets?  I do.  I have two cats.  Pepper and Chico.  Pepper's a black cat, but she's not a bad black cat.  There's that stigma.  Pepper's my cat and then Linda has a cat named Chico.

What is your favorite movie or movies? My favorite movie of all time is "Almost Famous" with Kate Hudson.  I love that movie.  I'm really a big fan, it's no secret, of the Twilight Series.  I love the books first, the movies second.  Any reason you like Twilight so much?  I know a lot of people have a hate on for it, but since the first book, I've really just been immersed in the story.  It's something that my Sister and I share, which is really nice and my best friend from home, Christina, she loves it too, so it's really like a bonding thing.  I already have my tickets for the next premier.

What is your favorite artist or band?  That's hard.  I'm really into Adelle right now.  I love Dave Matthews Band.  I just went to see the Civil Wars in concert.  It's like a small indy band.  That was a really cool concert.  It was really intimate and it was all acoustic.  It was cool to watch.

Favorite pre-game song to get pumped up?  Power by Kanye West.  Are you a big Kanye fan in general or just that song?  I mean sure, I think he's a good pump-up artist.  They always blare it in the teamroom before a game.  I usually listen to whatever else the girls listen to.  A lot of Beyonce.  Beyonce's really good for a pump up song.

Pepsi or Coke?  I don't drink soda.  What do you prefer to drink instead?  Water or cranberry juice.  I hate carbonation.

Favorite Cereal?  Lucky Charms... or Frosted Flakes.  It's a tie.  It's a tie?  Yeah, it's a tie.  So, how do you reconcile that?  I usually do half and half.  It's pretty good.  You have like half of each in the same bowl?  Yeah, yeah.  It's pretty good.  With skim milk.  Skim milk?  Not whole, not 2%, skim milk.  Why is that?  It's not as heavy, so you can really taste the flavor.

What is your favorite city or town? You know, I never really appreciated Hull before I left for college, but it's a really, really truly beautiful and special place.  It's right on the water.  It's a peninsula, so it's surrounded by beach and bay and when I go back there it's like a sense of calm.  That's where my family is, a lot of my family is there.  I never really appreciated its beauty until I left.

What is your favorite ice cream?  Moose Tracks with fudge swirl and peanut butter cups.  I work in an ice cream shop called Ricky's.  In Hull?  Yes, it's right next to an arcade, it's conjoined.  We have twenty-something flavors of ice cream and we have like hot dogs and hamburgers too.  It's like grill and ice cream.  I just can't stay away from the Moose Tracks.  I've also recently taken a liking to Mint Chocolate Chip.

How many foreign countries have you been to?  Zero, which is really sad.  I really want to travel.  It's really important to me, especially after college to travel.  I really want to experience that.  Do you have any place in mind that you'd like to travel to?  I'd love to go to Italy.  My best friend Christina from home is from Italy.  She came over when she was eight and she still speaks fluent Italian, which I think is the coolest thing ever.  She'll be out with her Mom and switch from English to Italian, I think it's really cool.  I'd love to go to Italy, Ireland, Scotland.  Russia would be really cool.  Morocco maybe.

If it could rain something other than rain, what would it rain?  Money.

Who is your favorite Sesame Street character? Oh my god, Elmo!  Why Elmo?  I carried a doll of Elmo my whole childhood.  It says "I love you" on the shirt that he wears.  I still have it.

Hats or no hats?  Eh, no hats.  Not a big fan?  If I'm at a baseball game, I'll wear one, but I think that would look kind of weird on my head.  So, it's a situational thing?  Yeah, situational, definitely.

Morning or night?  Morning.  I'm a morning person.  Why is that?  There's something about getting up and opening the shades and letting the sun come in.  Especially on a really nice day, it's really kind of refreshing.  It starts your day off right.

Peanut Butter: Crunchy or creamy?  Creamy.  Oh, I can't stand crunchy!  Peanuts aren't my favorite, in general.  I like peanut butter.  Especially peanut butter and chocolate.  Anything with peanut butter and chocolate, sign me up.  I love it.  Crunchy just skeeves me out, I don't know why.  I just don't like peanuts really.

Favorite Season?  Fall.  My birthday's in Fall.  Something about foliage, the leaves falling off the trees.  I know this is going to sound silly, because it's usually what Spring is about, but it symbolizes a new start for me.  Leaves are falling off and Winter will come and then Spring and everyone's happy.  I really love the Fall.

Who's your favorite Family Guy character?  I don't watch Family Guy, but if I had to pick, I'd pick the dog, Brian.  How do you know about the dog, Brian, if you don't watch the show?  The restaurant we work with, I used to work at the arcade when I was younger, that was our most popular stuffed animal, was Brian the dog.  Do you have a favorite TV show then?  Criminal Minds.
