What's Up with the Wildcats Ian Driscoll
Full Name: Ian Keith Driscoll
Sport: Soccer and Tennis
Birthday: July 12th
Hometown: Framingham, MA
High School: Framingham
Year: Sophomore
Major: I have a major in Special Ed., a major in Math and a minor in Literature. What drew you to choose those areas of study? I'm not good in math, so I thought that if I went into the classroom and I didn't have an enjoyment for math or any tools to use, then my kids in the classroom wouldn't get math, so I chose to be a math major. Special ed is because I started working with people with severe neurological disorders and I like that and my Aunt was a special ed teacher for 35 years. Do you feel like your decision to major in math has helped you in terms of why you chose it? Yeah. I like the math department at Wheelock. I have Galina Dobrynina as my math teacher that I've had, I think three times now, so it's good. What's your career intention? To be a teacher in an integrated classroom with people with special education and people in the general student population.
Nickname: No. My Mom gave me Ian, so there were no nicknames.
What do you like most about Wheelock? All the activities that you can get involved in. So, sports or clubs and the leadership opportunities. Are there any clubs that you're involved in that you really enjoy? I'm involved in CAB, I'm senator of the Class Council 2014. That's it right now. What is CAB? Campus Activities Board. They're one of the biggest clubs. It organizes the major events on campus.
Where is your favorite place on campus? I guess the cafe, would probably be my favorite. Actually, no, that's not true. The commuter lounge, because I was a commuter and I have nostalgia for the commuter life. Do you live on campus now? Yeah, I do now. I'm trying to be an R.A. for next semester. If I am down in the basement, I try and peek in the commuter lounge to see who's in there.
What is your favorite sports team? Patriots. Have you always been a Pats fan? Yeah. I'm getting a little nervous this week. Are you nervous or excited or what? I'm nervous and excited, almost more nervous now, though, but it will be good. I've been listening to as much as I can about developments, but I just have to wait for game day. Would you be less nervous if Gronk didn't have an ankle injury? Yeah, I would definitely be less nervous.
Who is your favorite athlete? Vince Wilfork or Teddy Bruschi. One of those two. What about those two appeal to you? Determination and that both of them play positions that are more about supporting and working as a unit than breaking out on your own performance and I find that aspect very interesting. Vince does a lot of work, but it's mostly behind the scenes. He'll bring two people his way, so that another teammate can go shoot the gap or something like that.
What is something that most people don’t know about you? My Brother had a baby a little while ago. It's a girl. She's six months old now.
Where is your favorite vacation spot? Turks and Caicos. It's 50 miles off the coast of Jamaica. We went when I was young. It was an all-inclusive resort. There was an ice cream hut and there was a chess board that had pieces that were the same size as me. So, that was a cool experience. It had a waterfall and once you go past the waterfall there's a water bar, so you just sit in the water. It was pretty cool. How old were you? I think I was eight. And of course the ice cream hut was a big attraction. Oh my gosh, every time. Every time I walked by. Because it was all-inclusive, you could have as much as you wanted? Yeah, you could eat or get sodas any time you wanted.
What accomplishment are you most proud of in your sport? For soccer, the goal that I scored in one of the games. That was pretty cool, because I went out of formation, which wasn't good, now thinking back on it. It was cool to be in the right position, knowing where I needed to be, even though it wasn't my position, thinking ahead.
What is your favorite holiday? Saint Patty's Day, probably. Why is that? Because I'm Irish and I don't know much about Irish, but it's cool to have a holiday. It's nice to have a holiday that celebrates just you and your ethnicity. Yeah, I don't really know much about being Irish. I suppose if you were a ground hog, then today (February 2) would be your favorite holiday? Yeah, it definitely would be.
Bacon bits or croutons? Bacon bits. Why bacon bits? I like meat. Okay. Fair enough.
Would you rather live in a log cabin or downtown? Can I have my log cabin downtown? Sure, why not? Okay, I would like that. I figure, if you're able to afford to live downtown, then you should be able to build a log cabin. Why would you want that combination? Because it's like a cozy feel, but you could walk out and be in a big city. Framingham is technically the largest town in the United States, because it's not a city yet. So, it's got a really cool feel, where you can be at your house and you can be like kind of secluded, but all your friends are right around and it's very busy, but at the same time can be very relaxed. What constitutes being a town without being a city? A mayor. Oh, okay. So, we don't have a mayor, we just have select men and women. I learned something new today.
What does community service mean to you? Giving back or helping out when you know that you've been given opportunities that other people may not have been given. Have you done community service in the past? Oh, I'm on SophServe as a club too, which is Sophomore Community Service and Jump Start. I'm on that. Those two groups work together for MLK Day to paint some pre-schools and move some stuff around, so that was cool. Have you had a favorite project that you've done? It was a service learning trip. The New Orleans trip I went on this past trip. That was really fun doing dry wall and mudding and all different types of things. With the group we had down there, it was really fun to be in that community.
Do you have any pets? I have a turtle, named Don for Donatello. It's not my cat, but there's a cat in my house named Jonesie for Indiana Jones. How long have you had the turtle? The turtle is older than me, it's 24 now. Oh, my gosh. Yeah, it was my Brother's turtle before me. He's 10 years older. So, you inherited the turtle? Yeah, I got the turtle. It was like a hand-me-down turtle? Yeah, like most of the clothing and everything.
What is your favorite movie or movies? I watched a lot of movies when I was a kid. Probably "The Mask". "The Mask" is like my kid one. "Boondock Saints", "V: For Vendetta". I do like "Twilight". I like a lot of movies, but "The Mask" is probably the top one. Were you happy when "Boondock Saints" came out with a sequel? Like most sequels, it doesn't really live up to the first.
What is your favorite artist or band? Probably, Eminem, but I do like Ray Charles and Adele and Etta James. My Pandora is very diversified, music wise, so there could be a country station or old school hip hop or I like classical music like Ray LaMontagne or something.
Favorite pre-game song to get pumped up? Whatever is
playing. Whatever's playing on the field I can pretty much
get pumped up to.
Pepsi or Coke? Coke, because it's easier to order Diet Coke. I was on a study for two years about how Diet Coke versus regular Coke affects your diet. How does it affect it? I didn't think I drank that much sugary beverages, but after the first two weeks of being on the study, I had lost 10 pounds from just drinking Diet Coke and water, instead of Coke and Mountain Dew.
Favorite Cereal? When I live here, Lucky Charms. When I live at home, it's Reese's Puffs. Is Reese's Puffs just not available? Yeah, it's just not. They don't have it. So, when you say they don't have it, you mean the cafeteria doesn't have it? Yeah, the cafe doesn't have it. Or is it that you don't have the foresight or energy to walk down to Shaw's and purchase it? I don't want to. I'm already paying for meals, so I don't want to go pay more money and I can eat Lucky Charms and be happy. What if you smuggled a container of Lucky Charms out of the cafeteria and went to Shaw's and offered up a trade? Well, they only do these huge things, so I would have to have a little plastic baggy of Lucky Charms and unless the cashier I was talking to loved Lucky Charms, I don't know if they would do that trade. Just putting it out there.
What is your favorite city or town? Boston. Why Boston? It's home. Do you have a favorite place in Boston that you like to go to? No, I don't, because I like going different places purposely to see different people, get a different feel and like different visuals. I like a lot of areas in Boston. That's my favorite city, but my favorite town is Framingham.
What is your favorite ice cream? Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Do you have a place that you like to get it at? Friendly's. Are you disappointed that some of the Friendly's locations have been shutting down? There were three around me, so it's okay.
How many foreign countries have you been to? Oh, I went
to France once. And Turks and Caicos.
Oh yeah, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica. Okay. When
did you go to France? When I was young.
Six. Was it a family vacation thing?
Yeah, my Brother had taken French in high school, so I think my
family had to do something else there, but since he learned French,
he could navigate hotels and prices and things.
If it could rain something other than rain, what would it rain? Cats and dogs, so that that saying could no longer be used or....something other than rain...I don't know. I like water a lot, so I'm good with rain. Otherwise, the ASPCA would have a real problem.
Who is your favorite Sesame Street character? Grouch. Why do you like him? Dave Chappelle had a bit about him. I know the bit. It's soo good! So, Dave Chappelle's joke about him. Come on Grouch get it together! The heartlessness of everyone towards him, but he comes off as the bad guy.
Hats or no hats? No hats. Why no hats? I get a weird hair problem. It gets matted and I don't like that.
Morning or night? Night. Why do you prefer night? Because I like jogging in colder temperatures, where you can breathe, and I feel like night time you can run and not be gasping for breath. In the morning, the air feels thinner, but at night, you can't really be seen, so you might get hit, which isn't good. Do you accommodate for that? Yeah, I try to. Bright orange, usually helps or I go inside. I don't like a lot of noise, so night time is better. So you look like a roadside construction worker when you run? Yeah.
Peanut Butter: Crunchy or creamy? Crunchy. Why crunchy? That's what was put in my sandwiches all my life.
Favorite Season? Fall. Why the Fall? Because it's not really cold, but you know it's going to come. It's not too hot and I like wearing sweatshirts. It's kind of sweatshirt weather. In the Fall, the football games that we play, back at home, we'll play tag some days in fall and tackle others. As it starts to snow, we'll play tackle more, because people, hopefully can get less hurt. That's why I like that season. Because the snow softens the blow? Yeah, it softens the drive into the ground.
Who's your favorite Family Guy character? Brian. Why Brian? Because he doesn't seem very understood, but he's a dog and can talk to Stewie. So, you were sad at the episode when they had the new Brian? Yeah.
